Wind and siding in Middle Tennessee
The straight-line winds that come through with spring storm fronts pull vinyl siding off subdivision homes every year. Panels that were nailed too tight cannot flex and crack; panels nailed too loose or with too few fasteners lift and unzip along the lock. The damage usually starts at corners and on the windward gable end.
A single blown-off panel is a quick fix if the profile and colour are still made. Older or discontinued profiles are harder, and sometimes the honest answer is to re-side one whole elevation rather than patch with a near match that looks wrong.
Vinyl, fibre cement or wood
Vinyl is the most common siding around Clarksville because it is affordable and never needs paint. Its weaknesses are wind, impact from hail and mowers, and warping from dark colours or from a neighbour's window reflecting sun onto it.
Fibre cement costs more and weighs more but holds paint for a decade or longer, resists hail and does not burn. Wood siding and older hardboard are found on the mid-century homes near downtown; hardboard in particular swells and fails when its paint gives out, and replacing it with fibre cement keeps the look.
What is behind the siding
On a full re-side we strip to the sheathing, repair any rot, install a house wrap taped at every seam and flash every window and door with self-adhered membrane so water that gets behind the siding is directed out. That layer is what keeps the wall dry for thirty years. Siding installed straight over old sheathing with no wrap is a wall waiting to rot.
We also check that the attic and wall ventilation are not being blocked by the new siding, particularly at the soffits.
Siding and the roof edge
Where a roof meets a wall, the step flashing and the siding above it have to work together. A lot of the leaks we trace in this county are at that junction, with the siding run tight to the shingles and no kick-out flashing at the bottom. Any siding job near a roofline gets that detail corrected.
Insurance claims for siding
Wind and hail damage to siding is commonly covered. We document the damage with photos of each elevation, count the affected panels and note whether the profile is still available, which decides whether a repair or a full elevation replacement is the right claim.
Trim, soffit and fascia
Rotten fascia and soffit are replaced and wrapped in aluminium or replaced with fibre cement as part of the siding job, since they are usually in worse shape than the siding itself.
