Why gutters clog fast here
Montgomery County has heavy tree cover in the older neighbourhoods and along the river, and oaks, maples and sweetgums drop leaves, seed pods and spiky gumballs from spring through late autumn. Asphalt shingles also shed granules into the gutter, and after a hailstorm that volume jumps.
Two cleanings a year is the usual minimum, once after the spring seed drop and once after the leaves are down. Homes under mature trees need more.
What a full cleaning includes
We clear every run by hand and bag the debris rather than blowing it into the flowerbeds. Downspouts are flushed from the top and checked at the bottom for flow. Underground drains, common on newer subdivision homes, are tested for blockage since a clogged buried line backs the whole system up.
While we are up there, the gutters get checked for pitch, loose hangers, split seams and rust, and the fascia behind them is probed for softness. Findings go into a short written note with photos.
Repairs that usually follow
Gutters that hold standing water have lost their pitch, and re-hanging them with a fall toward the downspout fixes it. Leaking corners and end caps get cleaned and re-sealed. Sections crushed by a ladder or a falling limb are replaced.
Fascia that has rotted behind a leaking gutter is replaced and wrapped in aluminium before the gutter goes back on. Ignoring it means the new hangers have nothing solid to bite into.
Gutter guards
Guards reduce cleaning but do not end it. Fine-mesh guards handle pine needles and shingle grit; solid reverse-curve guards shed leaves but can overshoot in the hard downpours a Tennessee thunderstorm delivers. We fit guards where they make sense and tell you when they will not, which is usually on a low-pitch roof under a heavy canopy.
Gutters and the roof edge
Water backing up in a clogged gutter soaks the bottom course of shingles and the drip edge. Over a few seasons the decking at the eave rots, and the first sign is a soft spot you feel when standing on a ladder. Gutter cleaning is the cheapest roof maintenance there is, and it is often the first thing we recommend after a roof inspection.
